Over the past month, Ramsbury Scouts and Cubs have embarked on a fascinating journey to learn where our food comes from, thanks to the wonderful team at Grove Farm in nearby Stitchcombe. The children had the unique opportunity to dive into the world of food production and farming, exploring each stage from pasture to plate!
Their adventure began with Jon, the butcher, who gave the group an exclusive tour of the farm’s cold store and facility. He then demonstrated the art of butchery by carving a pig, showing the young Scouts and Cubs where different cuts of meat come from—a lesson that captured their curiosity and respect for the craft. But it wasn’t just about watching; it was time for the kids to roll up their sleeves and get hands-on! Under careful guidance, they learned to use a mincer and burger maker to shape their very own burgers, ready to grill up at the next family BBQ.
While some were honing their burger-making skills, others explored the farm, meeting cows and goats and learning more about livestock and farming practices. The experience continued with a sausage-making session where the kids were thrilled by the speed of the sausage machine. They did a fantastic job of transforming the long sausage links into neatly tied, ready-to-cook sausages—a skill that required both patience and precision!
This incredible experience wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated team at Grove Farm, who not only shared their knowledge but also sent each child home with freshly made burgers and sausages to share with their families. It was a unique learning opportunity that brought food production to life, helping the children appreciate the effort and care that goes into each bite.
A huge thank you to Grove Farm for making this experience possible. For anyone inspired by our Scouts’ journey from farm to table, we highly recommend stopping by Grove Farm or visiting their website to discover the finest quality local produce.
